Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Peel Tower High above the chimney stacks at 1100 feet above sea level on Holcombe Hill is Peel Tower.

The tower is 128 feet high and was built in 1852 as a memorial to Sir Robert Peel who established the Metropolitan Police Force for London based at Scotland Yard. The 1,000 constables employed were affectionately nicknamed 'Bobbies' or, somewhat less affectionately, 'Peelers' (both terms are still used today). Although at first unpopular, they proved very successful in London, and by 1835 all cities in the UK were being directed to form their own police forces. There is also a statue of the Bury born Sir Robert Peel next to the Two Tubs Inn public house in Bury 186004 Picture taken from 310602 early in the morning to show the rising sun light on the towers windows an effect that only lasts about 20 minutes.
