Summary

Description

This is a nice town set on the banks of the River Tweed amid rolling hills in Southern Scotland. The town is busy with tourists in the summer months and many locals commute into Edinburgh 25 miles away, for work.

We see here the Old Parish Church, built in the mid-1800s in a Gothic style. The coat of arms on the church tower includes three salmon - representing the importance of salmon fishing on the river running through the town.

By far the most famous person to come from here was John Buchan, 1st Baron Tweedsmuir, who wrote several well-known books, including "The 39 steps". He became a politician and became the Governor General of Canada, serving from 1935 until his death in 1940.

Although there is no railway remaining in the town today, I was told on very good authority that during World War Two the King and Queen were visiting the area and their train was stopped in a nearby tunnel overnight as a security precaution - being easily guarded and secure from aerial attack. I know where the tunnel is and one day I may go back for a look!
