The history of my patient is asfollows: Benjamin L., seven years one month old, weight 39^pounds, height 2 feet 11 inches. About normal for a three-year-old child. Was a nursling. Born at full term in America, ofRussian parents, not related. One of eight children, one of whomis paraplegic. No family history obtainable. The mother has amedium-sized parenchymatous goiter, unaccompanied by symp-toms. Has been, and is, a healthy woman. She noticed that thischild was unusually cold and pallid at his ninth month, and thathe did not act as a child of his age should. He was obstinatelyconstipated from birth and had a pot belly without umbilicalhernia or signs of rickets. Did not sit up until after his first yearand did not walk until the middle of his third year. At three and a half years, after which for a short timehe was placed on thyroid feeding, he presented the typical signsof a myxedematous idiot. See Figs i and 2. When first seen byme at his eighth year he was dwarfed to the size of a three-year-old child; walked with waddling gait and stood with a broadenedbase, clinging to something for support. He swayed when heclosed his eyes. His head was too large for his body. He pre-sented a stolid, unintelligent, bloated, ashy countenance, withwrinkled forehead, flattened, broad, thick nose and thick lips, be-hind which were the decayed, deciduous teeth. His hair wasslightly roughened, but plentiful. When asked his name he husk-ily and unintelligibly muttered it. There
