At no time since admission had there beenany icterus nor ascites. The spleen was just palpable.Average of blood counts showed,— Red corpuscules 4,897,000 White corpuscles 25,000 Hemoglobin 75 per cent. Fresh cover slips showed poikilocytosis, and differences inthe size of the reds, some larger and some smaller thannormal. Stained specimen showed a secondary anemia of moderategrade. Differential counts of leucocytes gave on an average,— Neutrophils 89.5 per cent. Small mononuclears 4.0 Large 2.5 Transitional leucocytes 3.5 Eosinophiles 5 * i. e., a leucocytosis at the expense of the small mononuclear leucocytes. PEDIATRICS. liver seemed so smooth, I began on a dietetic treatment, ratherthan an antisyphilitic, thinking perhaps alcoholic hypertrophiccirrhosis was present, and gave the child modified milk forfour months, with the following drugs in turn without any ap-preciable gain, i. e., calomel, tincture of mix vomica, salinecathartes, ipecac, etc. The hygienic treatment of rickets was carried out scrupu-lously and the mechanical by recumbency on a Bradford frame.Cod liver oil and syrup of the iodide of iron were also exhibitedand digested. Iodide of potassium in increasing doses was then faithfullytried with negative results. Then the tropical treatment ofhypertrophic cirrhosis of the liver was employed by means ofstupes of nitro-hydrochloric acid (Ji to water Jviij) witha slight apparent reduction in the size of the liver. The bowelspreviously constipated became regular, and the general condi-tion improved; the child could stand and walk if assisted.This treatment was continued six weeks,
