English: (A–G) Transmission electron microscopy images of Cissus verticillata food bodies in the reserve accumulation phase. (A) Food body showing cells in both the epidermal and internal layers with dense cytoplasm and large nuclei. (B) Epidermal cell; mitochondria can be seen in the cytoplasm, among a few other organelles; note the poorly developed crista in the mitochondria and the dictyosomes. The nucleus is globose and central. (C) Internal cell with mitochondria with well-developed crista, plastids and dictyosomes. (D, E) Detail of the nuclear region of an internal cell, demonstrating a lobed nucleus; in (E) observe the presence of mitochondria between the lobes formed by the nuclear membrane. (F, G) Cytoplasm of an internal cell; note the presence of plastids and mitochondria. Note the electron-dense stroma of the plastids and their poorly developed membrane systems. Note in (G) the plasmodesmata (arrows) uniting adjacent cells, and the smooth endoplasmic reticulum near the plasma membrane.
