English: Chaplain Arnold E. Resnicoff, U.S. Navy, prepares to paint the Hebrew letters into the Jewish Chaplain symbol as the final touch for the Peacekeeping Chapel, in the Marine Barracks, Beirut, Lebanon, for use by U.S. military forces assigned to the International Peacekeeping Force. The design on the plaque was based on the official U.S. Navy Chaplain Corps seal in use at that time, showing symbols for Christian and Jewish chaplains. On Oct 23, 1983, when a suicide bomber drove a truck laden with explosives into the Barracks, destroyed the building, the lower part of this plaque was destroyed, but the upper part, including the word "peace" remained, symbolizing both the hope of peace and the reality of war. The plaque is on display in the Armed Forces Chaplaincy Center, Ft. Jackson, Columbia, South Carolina. |
