English: The shallow draught steamer Peace was built by Thornycroft at Chiswick in 1882 for service on the Congo River. It was shipped to Africa in sections weighing no more than 64 pounds, and it was important as the first vessel from the yard with watertube boilers. They were of the Herreshoff type, and John Thornycroft later (1885) patented his own design. The steamer was described in the periodical Engineering, May 18, 1883 on page 463-464, along with this drawing on page 466. |
