C'est pour la beauté de cette vallée de la Roume, proche de Banyuls-sur-mer, sa ville natale, qu'Aristide Maillol a acheté cette métairie. Il avait vécu durant son enfance dans cette vallée dont il affectionnait particulièrement le paysage. Il allait y dessiner et peindre lors de ses séjours à Banyuls puis, plus âgé, il s'y retira. Il y reçut de nombreuses personnalités artistiques pour lesquelles il aimer cuisiner lui-même les repas. Sa tombe se trouve dans la clairière de la Métairie dont Lucien Maillol (1896-1972) a fait don à Banyuls à la mort de son père. Grâce aux actions conjuguées de son denier modèle Dina Vierny, d'élus de la ville de Banyuls et de mécènes, la Métairie a été restaurée et un petit musée Maillol y a été ouvert au public fin 1994. Il dépend de la fondation Dina Vierny qui a créé le grand musée Maillol à Paris.
