The weaker onesmay be fastened down by laying a stone upon them, and the stronger by hookedwooden pegs. The protection of tender plants, both in structures devoted to that end and in theopen groimd, is now a principal object of the gardeners skill. Although fires cannever be altogether dispensed with, they will be rendered far less frequentlynecessary if straw or reed hurdles are placed on the roof of the house during coldwinds or frosts; and pits and frames that are not supplied with a heating apparatuscan be entirely and effectuallj- sheltered by tliat means. Air should be given toevery structure, including tiie dry stove, in clear mild weatlier, even thoiighartificial heat should happen to be applied at the same time. Watering should boattended to on the finest days, and always in the morning.
