All the buds, except those at the base and thetwo uppermost ones, should be extracted, as, if left, they would only weaken theyoung plant; and, in inserting them into the ground, care should be taken toplace the earth close around them, that no cavities may be left in which water can.collect. Beds of Tulips and other bulbs, should be covered, when necessary, witha little dry litter, and all insects that would injure or destroy the bulbs should becarefully looked after. Remove any trees or shmbs which require shifting, orthat may be desired in any other part of the garden. Always take them up withas much earth as possible about their roots, and be careful to preserve the fibrousroots entire. Examine Dahlia roots occasionally, and adopt gentle measures forthe expulsion of damp from the apartment in which they are kept, if it shall befound to have entered.

Generic Character.—Calyx coloured, deciduous, five-sep.illed ; sepals superior, prolonged at tlic baseinto a hollow spur, /e/a/s four, souictimcs growing within each otlier; two superior, prolonged atthe base iuto appendages contained within tlie spur. Stamens indefinite. Ovaries one to five,usually three. Capsule entire, distinct, one-valved, one-celled. Seeds numerous, dry berries. Specific Character.—Pla.i. p.ennial, growing usually from four to five feet high. Leaves with fiveprincipal divisions, deeply lobed and jagged; seiraturcs acute ; deep green on the surface, light greenbeneath, smooth.
