Annuals may still besown in pots, particularly stocks and mignonette, to flower early in the spring. The principal seed-harvest in the flower-garden will occur this month, directions forcollecting which have already been given in our last number. Measures shoiildbe taken to entrap earwigs on Dahlias, by suspending any slight hollow tubes fromdifferent parts of the plant, and occasionally examining them, and shaking outthe insects into hot water. The seed of biennial and perennial plants should besown as soon as it is ripe in an open exposed situation. A few of the hardier kindsof annuals may likewise now be sown in the open ground, where they can be shel-tered as much as possible from cutting winds during the winter.

Generic Character.—Labellum spun-ed, divided at the base (either short or long), always joined to tliecolumn, trifid ; middle lobe fleshy. Petals spreading, distinct. Pollen-masses two, obliquelytwo-lobed. Specific Character.—Leaves cylindrical. Racemes ascending, usually two-flowered, equal with theleaves. Sepals oblong, obtuse, the highest one erect, lateral ones slightly twisted under thelabellum. Labellum conical at the base; side segments ascending, nearly truncate; middle onepubescent at the summit, extended, truncate, emarginate. It may safely be asserted that Orchidaceous Epiphytes are the most exquisitelybeautiful of all natures productions. Rich in every shade or variety of colour,—airy and fantastic, but always elegant in habit,—^replete, beyond description, withevery charm that can allure the senses, or enchant the mind;—they totally eclips
