Description

Paulnay (Indre)

Eglise Saint-Etienne.


Les fresques de l'église ont été réalisées entre le XIV et le XV ème siècles. Elles illustrent l'Enfer, les activités de l'homme au cours de l'année, les quatre épisodes du martyre de Saint Etienne.


Sur le côté nord de la nef : vestiges de l’Enfer.

Sur la voûte de la deuxième travée : calendrier médiéval. Les douze mois ne sont pas tous bien conservés et la lecture des images figurant octobre, novembre et décembre est presque impossible. Janvier est illustré par un personnage attablé devant un repas. Avril est figuré par un homme debout qui semble se défendre d’insectes qui tournent autour de sa tête. En mai, un fauconnier à cheval partant à la chasse.

Travée droite du choeur : anges musiciens.

Au cul-de-four de l'abside : Christ en majesté.

Et au-dessous sous forme de bandeau les épisodes du martyre de saint Etienne, patron de l’église.
