Fitzgibbons, leader of the Police Glee Club since its organization and president of the Sergeants' Benevolent Association, died at 11:15 o'clock last night at his home at 56 Cuthbert Place, Kew Gardens, Queens. He was 53 years old. Sergeant Fitzgibbons had been Ill of poisoning for the last five months. The illness, it was said, was traceable to twenty-one stab wounds received while on duty as a young patrolman in Harlem. A member of the force for about thirty years, he received many decorations for various feats, including a gold, two silver and four bronze medals. At one time he held the rank of acting lieutenant and was in command of a Manhat-tan gun squad. In February, 1934, Commissioner O'Ryan demoted him to the rank of sergeant and assigned him to the Bedford Avenue station in Brooklyn, to which he was attached at the time of his death. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Margaret Fitzgibbons, and two sons, Edward and George.
