Title
Paternoster Bead from Middle Rasen
Description
English: Copper alloy

Bead. Cast biconical bead with aperture of diameter 6mm. The surface is lacquered or oiled with a black shiny finish. This is probably a Paternoster bead, marking the decades of a devotional rosary, while the black coating is characteristic of Post-Medieval metalwork. Devotion to the rosary became popular in the later medieval period, and in counties such as Lincolnshire remained popular until the Pilgrimage of Grace, an abortive popular rising against the religious policies of Henry VIII. After this episode the trappings of Catholic devotion were rigorously suppressed. Suggested date: Early Post-Medieval, 1500-1550.

Diameter: 12.8mm, Thickness: 7.6mm, Weight: 3.94gms.
