Description
English: Patera. Coptic Egypt, 4th-5th century. Bronze, 23.3 x 6 x 12 cm. The handle probably shows Aphrodite adorned with jewels. The strength of the handle attachment is reinforced by the motif of two dolphins, upside down, echoing the orientation of the legs, curiously crossed. The link is effected by two "pearls" or two "breasts". She is holding a laurel wreath which contains the "Coptic cross". The suspension ring is held by a lion's head. The design of this object was made by assimilating various pagan motifs, including the birth of Aphrodite out of water. Lyon Museum of Fine Arts. G1365 / IEC 4. The motif of Aphrodite naked with crossed legs is found in a candelabra which seems to come from the same workshop as the Patera. Lyon Museum of Fine Arts. G 288 / IEC 46.
Français : Patère. Égypte copte, 4e-5e siècle. Bronze, 23,3 x 6 x 12 cm. Le manche figure probablement Aphrodite parée de bijoux. La solidité de l'attache du manche est renforcée par le motif de deux dauphins, la tête en bas, en écho à l'orientation des jambes, curieusement croisées. Le lien s'effectuant par deux "perles" ou deux "seins". Elle tient une couronne de laurier qui contient la "croix copte". L'anneau de suspension est maintenu par une tête de lion. La conception de cet objet s'est faite par assimilation de divers motifs païens, dont la naissance d'Aphrodite hors de l'eau. Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon. G1365 / IEC 4.
