Description

Photograph taken by John Millington Synge in Inis Meáin. According to Lilo Stephens in My wallet of photographs: the collected photographs of J. M. Synge (Dublin, 1971), the photograph represents the front of Pat Mac Donagh’s cottage in which Synge stayed on Inis Meáin. Stephens identifies the young child wearing a dress and pinafore as a boy, Michaileen, dressed as a girl according to island custom to prevent his being stolen by the fairies. Original donated to the Trinity College in Dublin by the Synge family. Item reference :
