Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Pascal P. Beals House, 273 Nottingham Terrace, Buffalo, New York, June 2022. Built in 1914, the Beals House was among the first to be completed in the neighborhood then known as Nye Park. The local press eagerly covered its construction, particularly an October 1913 piece in the Buffalo Courier that waxed rhapsodic about the lot's prime location overlooking Delaware Park Lake and the Historical Society building, the exclusivity of the subdivision ("the severity of [whose] restrictions guarantees efficiently, beyond all question, the absolute character of the property and its environment for all time to come", where "the least expensive home... must represent an investment of $50,000, nor is the dollar mark the only qualification sought", etc. etc. ad nauseam), and even the signing of the contract, reportedly overseen personally by real estate magnate Sylvanus Nye. As to the house's architecture, it's a good example of the contemporaneously popular Colonial Revival style whose façade is dominated by a monumental hexastyle portico of Doric pilasters. Round arches are a noticeable recurring motif, as well, present atop the windows in the gabled dormers that pierce the side-gabled roof, as well as on the side of the arcaded entrance terrace at right. Pascal Pratt Beals (1850-1934) made his living as a manufacturer of iron and steel hardware, taking the reins of the family business after his father's death in 1903 and growing it into the prominent firm of Beals, McCarthy and Rogers, of which he continued as president until his retirement shortly after moving to Nottingham Terrace. He continued living in the house, together with his wife Cornelia, until his death.
