| Description |
English: An illustration showing how a cosmic ray creates an extensive air shower upon colliding with the earth's atmosphere. The primary cosmic ray strikes molecules in the atmosphere, releasing a shower of subatomic particles. These particles then strike other particles and air molecules, creating even more particles. It is these secondary particles that can then be detected on the ground. A similar illustration by the same author can be found in the Millard County Cosmic Ray Center in Delta, Utah. |
