Summary
[edit]DescriptionParthenon facade 2023.jpg |
English: The Parthenon is the largest and most famous monument of the Acropolis, this rocky hill that dominates the city of Athens in Greece. Its name means “girls’ apartment” in Greek, a term that may originally have designated one of its rooms. Built in the 5th century BC, the Parthenon was not strictly speaking a temple but a building intended to house in a first room the grandiose chryselephantine statue (that is to say of gold and ivory) of Athena, protective goddess of the city, and in the second, the treasure of the Athenians and the cities of the league of Delos, allied against the Persian Empire.
