Title |
Part of Medieval padlock |
||
Description |
English: Medieval copper alloy barrel lock, 42mm long, 22.5mm wide and 11mm thick. The object is in fair condition and weighs 9.60grams. The object consists of an elongated hollow tube which is hexagonal in cross section. It is decorated on each outside with a solid incised border which contains a series of three pairs of wavy lines made up of punch marks filling its three outer faces. At one end it has a rectangular protrusion placed at a right angle, the outer edge of which holds the bar, a circular sectioned tapering shaft aligned parallel with the main body.
This padlock would have had a barb-spring mechanism opened by a barrel padlock key and its size may indicate use on a casket or chest. Numerous similar examples have been recorded on the PAS database. For examples see: LEIC-B39FE6, LVPL-D91832, SF-9C3B66, YORYM-CDA30B and YORYM-6016A5. |
