English: Plate 6 from the second set of Thomas and William Daniell's 'Oriental Scenery.' By the end of the 18th Century Calcutta was a flourishing city with beautiful public buildings and grand houses. Although almost exclusively a British residential area, the land was normally owned and the houses erected by the local Bengali merchants and rented out.
