| Description |
English: Parry People Mover PPM35 railbus on Bristol Harbour Railway (close-up). The railbus provided a public service as a demonstration project for 30 months in 1998-2000. It used part of the disused Bristol Harbour Railway and ran from a stop fairly near the SS Great Britain to the former Industrial Museum, near Prince Street Bridge. This vehicle used an intermittent electric power system, in which a short length of conductor rail was mounted underneath platforms at the stops, and the flywheel on the vehicle was "charged" electrically while passengers got on and off. After 20-30 seconds, sufficient energy was contained in the flywheel for the vehicle to continue to the next stop, where the process was repeated.
Despite successful demonstrations here and elsewhere, it wasn't until 2009 that Parry People Movers were put into commercial service on the Stourbridge Town branch railway, and these use LPG fuel rather than electric charging. 1572541; 1376879; 1376894. |
