PARKINSONIAN PARADISE BIRD

On his pile of scratched earth, The lyre itself is silent But shimmering in the muted Greens and browns, The whole bird obscured By the flummery of his tail, The image of his lust.

From his throat comes his lust-song, Rapid and random: his own cries Mingled with the carols Of currawongs, honeyeater cackles, A dingo’s howl.

How often did settlers hear it, And misidentify the source?

Two centuries later, the lust remains, But the song is augmented With the click and whirr of Camera shutters, the beep Of a mobile phone, the cough Of a car ignition. The great mimic Records our intrusions, Makes music of our noise.

Source material: NM, Volume 14. The lyrebird, Menura novaehollandiae, apart from his spectacular mating display, is a superb mimic, and is capable of imitating human and mechanical noises as well as the more natural sounds of the bush.
