Description

The Park of Roses was the headquarters of the American Rose Society until 1974. Whetstone Park was originally a part of the 312 acre E. A. Fuller Farm. Columbus City Council approved the purchase of 106 acres on May 1, 1944 and recorded the deed on May 29, 1944.The land was used for Victory Gardens during World War II, with over 500 gardens being planted throughout the duration of the war. The name of Whetstone Park was adopted on April 18, 1949. Whetstone Park was dedicated on May 28-30, 1950. The 13-acre Park of Roses, which opened in June 1953, is part of the larger Whetstone Park. A building located at the east entrance to the Park of Roses was originally the home of the American Rose Society and later became the Barber Roselea Senior Center.
