Choice Double Dutch Hyacinths.
Text Appearing After Image:
As a rule the Single Dutch Hyacinths are as beautiful and desirable as the Double sorts, either for forcing or for out-door culture, and are preferred by many on account of the fraceful character of the ells. Some double varie- ties, however, are very su- perior in substance, form and color, and never fail to elicit great admiration, either in the window or conservatory, or in garden beds. They bloom later than the single Hyacinths, but for the garden this is not a serious fault, as the display is thus continued longer than where only single-flowered varieties are grown. The Hyacinths grown in beds may be cut freely without injury to the bulb, the cut being made at the surface of the ground. If pulled the stems will part at the tender part of the bulb, letting in the moist- ure, and causing the decay and loss of the bulb. All Hyacinths are hardy if the soil is sandy and well-drained. If clayey and tenacious, however, they are liable to rot in a wet season, unless lifted, dried off and stored away after blooming. Store in paper bags in a dry, cool cellar till autumn, then replant where the bulbs are to bloom. To have extra late Hya- cinths plant the bulbs in November or December, just before the ground freezes up, then mulch heavily with stable litter and do not disturb the mulch till the spikes begin to push through. Then remove the obstructing parts and encourage the development of the spikes. The varieties of Double Dutch Hyacinths I offer are the finest in cultiva- tion, and cannot fail to prove satisfactory, either for house or garden. Kindly note that none of the Hyacinths offered are second-class or auction bulbs, such as some deal- ers offer at a low price. Mine are first-class. I do not handle the inferior bulbs, nor recommend them, as they are generally disappointing. 4 J
