Parish needlegrass, Stipa parishii var. parishii, California, White Mountains, Black Mountain, Owens Valley drainage, elevation 2368 m (7770 ft). Parish needlegrass is a common and distinctive bunchgrass of rocky middle-elevation mountain slopes and high desert areas of the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico. It ranges from the mountains of southern California across the deserts to northeastern Nevada, southern Utah, northwestern Arizona, and Baja California. Obviously I was losing light at this point and, not being a flash user, the images are not as sharp as I like, but they still show the distinctive aspect of this grass. The substrate and background is Lower Cambrian calcareous shale of the upper Poleta Formation. |
