fe du Pare), a small town with about 4800inhab., anotherpopular resort in summer. chiefly owing to its beautiful forest ofchestnuts, which covers an area of 5000 acres. It possesses a churchof the 14th century. Montmorency was once the residence of Rousseau, who spenttwo years (1756-58) in the house called the ^Ermitage de JeanJacques Rousseau ., and there wrote his Nouvelle Heloise. It is situatedon the N. side of the town, at the end of the Rue Gretry, and isrecognisable by its reddish walls (visitors not admitted). This un-pretending abode was fitted up for the philosophers use by theCountess dEpinay, in order to prevent his return to Geneva. Dur-ing the Revolution the Hermitage became national property, and wasfor a time occupied by Robespierre. In 1798 it was purchased by thecomposer Gretry., who died here in 1813. His heart was interred inthe garden, where a monument was erected to his memory, but inconsequence of a law-suit was afterwards removed to Liege, his i Treport,Anu.eu3
