Every once in awhile you stumble upon something that think might not amount to much and then come away pleasantly surprised. That's what happened when we passed through Paris, AR. We were on a quest to find the steam engine that a couple in Altus was telling us about. Our first stop was the Paris - Logan County Miners Memorial. It's a small building surrounded by relics of the coal mining era from places in and around Paris. We thought we would go in to find out where this Steam Locomotive was and we came out having learned much more about the area history. The lady who met us was very informative and we chatted with her for a good hour. We learned not only about the coal mining operations, but the conditions the miners had to work in. If you happen to pass through Paris, AR, I would recommend that you stop by. It's a small museum that's run by dedicated people who are committed to preserving the town's coal mining legacy. |
