Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The 'Buca delle lumache' (the 'Snail Hole') is a ponor within the Gessi Bolognesi e Calanchi dell'Abbadessa Park, in the metropolitan city of Bologna, Emilia-Romagna, Italy. It is part of the World Heritage site 'Evaporitic Karst and Caves of Northern Apennines'. The “candle-like erosions” are due to the action of water flowing over selenite, a mineral with a macrocrystalline and soluble nature. From the bottom of the ponor, cavers access the 'Grotta del pipistrello' (the 'Bat Cave').
