Description
English: On May 20, 2018, NASA’s Aqua satellite flew over southeastern Brazil, allowing the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board to acquire a true-color image of the confluence of two important rivers.

Flowing from the southeast to the northwest is the Tiete River. This long river originates in the high slopes of the Serra do Mar, a mountain range near the coast of Brazil. It curls inland more than 700 miles (1,130 km) until it reaches the Parana River. The waters of the Tiete spill into a lake created by the Eng Souza Dias Dam on the Parana, located just north of the city of Tres Lagoas.

The Parana River is the second longest river in South America – only the Amazon River is longer. Formed by the confluence of the Paranaiba River and the Rio Grande north of the Tiete River, the Parana crosses Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay for 3,032 mi (4,880 km) before flowing into the Atlantic Ocean at the Rio de la Plata.
