Note Le nom vernaculaire de Sylvain est attesté en France selon mes recherches depuis la parution de l'ouvrage d'Engramelle Papillons d'Europe (1779-1792), avec quatre espèces,

  • - le Grand Sylvain ou Sylvain, Papillons d'Europe, pl IX n°10 et X n°11
  • -le Petit Sylvain, pl XI n°13
  • -le Sylvain azuré , pl. XI n° 4
  • -et le Sylvain coenobite pl. X n° 12 .

Mais ces noms vernaculaires ont été reliès aux noms scientifiques de la manière suivante durant tout le XIXème siècle : Grand Sylvain : Nymphalis populi Petit Sylvain  : Nymphalis Sibylla, Sylvain azuré  : Nymphales camilla, Sylvain coenobite : Nymphales lucilla.
