, Esquire, who de-parted this life on the 16th day of February, 1842, aged 80years and 7 months,—the first settler at the Head of the Lake. Mr. Robert Land was certainly among the very earliestsettlers at the Head of the Lake, if not actually the first.A very interesting- and romantic incident is related in connec-tion with his experience in Canadian pioneer life. His earlyhome was on the banks of the Delaware river, when the thir-teen colonies cast off their allegiance to the British crown, anderected themselves into the Republic of the United States.Cherishing the name of Briton as an honorable birthright, andbeing loyal to king and country, he cast in his lot with theBritish. Naturally of a courageous disposition, and filled witha spirit of daring, he was frequently selected as the bearer ofimportant despatches.
