Summary
[edit]DescriptionPapermill Lock on the River Slea - geograph.org.uk - 781994.jpg |
English: Papermill Lock on the River Slea. The creation of the Slea Navigation in 1794 brought new industrial and commercial life to Sleaford. The good fortune overflowed the town and spread down the new river, with bone, dyers' and fullers' mills at Bone Mill Lock 334455 and a large flour mill at Holdingham Mill at the end of Holdingham Lane, (on the far left of the photograph, see 627461) The lock in this photograph, one of seven constructed between 1791-3, is the site of Evedon Paper Mill. On the right of the lock are the millrace and remains of the foundations of the paper mill. It had seven sets of millstones and supplied paper to a Boston printing works. It was demolished in the 1930s.
From the late 1850s traffic on the Slea Navigation rapidly decreased and tolls were lowered in an attempt to reverse the process. The reduction in profits, however, resulted in reduced maintenance and the navigation gradually silted up. The Slea Navigation finally closed in 1878, the locks being replaced with fixed sluices. |
