Summary

[edit]
Description These 'Rootrainers' are a good way of growing plants that hate having their roots disturbed, such as these poppies, which can be very unhappy grown in the usual way, with pricking out and potting on and so forth. The whole thing is sat on a pane of glass too so that the seedlings can't root down into the gravel below. As you can see the P.glaucum seed was a lot more viable (and slightly earlier into action) than the commutatum. I've tried the latter (the ladybird poppy) a few times direct sown without much success. This seems like the only alternative. I'm going to try Ononis fruticosa by this method too, and possibly Tephrosia virginica - a couple of legumes that also seem to tolerate root disturbance very badly.
