Description |
English: Papanui (1898) abandoned and on fire at St Helena. A starboard bow view of the passenger/cargo ship Papanui (1898) at anchor, abandoned and on fire off Jamestown, St Helena. The ship was reported with a fire in a bunker on 5 September, and was beached at St Helena on 11 September. The passengers were evacuated ashore having left their luggage and belongings behind on the ship. A number of the passengers were on their way to Australia to start new lives. This is a copy negative of a print, and the original print caption can be seen: "Burning of S.S. Papanui in St. Helena Harbour September 1911" |
