Title
Papal bulla of Honorius III
Description
English: MED Papal bulla or lead seal, of Honorius III (1216-27), in excellent condition. The identification is easy as the letters survive in such excellent condition. The obverse even has lines indicating the edge of the seal matrix where the lead was squeezed during sealing. The reverse is also in excellent condition with both the heads of Peter and Paul quite crisp, although the pelleting around the outer edge is slightly damaged at the top. The cord originally gripped by the seal was close to the surface of the reverse but it is not possible to see a clear enough impression to distinguish between silk or hemp threads (relating to ‘Letters of Grace’ – grants - or ‘Letters of Justice’ - a papal ruling) having been secured by the bulla. If anything, they suggest hemp cords, being quite rounded. The reverse side was sealed at 6º to the obverse, which represents quite a neat sealing. This is the sixth bulla of Honorius III to be recorded in the Diocese of Norwich.
