Title |
Papal bull |

Description |
English: A complete but distorted and damaged lead papal bulla. Oval and measuring 41mm by 32.5mm in size, it was presumably originally circular; one edge is especially damaged with a transverse groove, possibly due to agricultural damage. One face has the now worn relief busts of St Peter (on the right) and St Paul (on the left). They have the usual distinguishing features; St Paul has a high forehead, straight hair and a pointed beard, and St Peter has curly hair and beard both made up of pellets. They are both within a border of pellets and in between is a cross on a long stem. Above is the inscription [SPA] SPE. The other face again has a boarder of pellets and within this is the inscription INNO/CENTIVS/PIIII. This dates this bull to Pope Innocent IV between 1243-54. Papal bullae were attached to papal documents, such as indulgences. |
