Title
Papal Bulla - Pope Celestine III 1191-1198
Description
English: A cast lead sub-circular Bulla from Celestine III, in two pieces, split around the hole that would have contained the hemp or silk threads that would attach the Bulla to the document (Papal Bull).

The front shows the faces of Saint Paul and Saint Peter within a beaded circumference, and beaded border around the two Saints. The letters above SASPE is the abbreviation for Saint Paul and Saint Peter. A cross should be between the two images, However only the right horizontal bar can be seen in this example.

The reverse of the Bulla shows the name Celestine III (CELE /STINVS / PP III).The PP has an omega symbol 'Ω' above. PP represents 'Pastor Pastorum' translated as 'shepherd of the shepherds'.

Celestine III was the 176th pope of the catholic church from 1191 until his death in 1198.

The Bulla is made from cast lead, with a light coloured patina. It is sub-circular in shape measures 37.00mm top to bottom, approx 38.25mm side to side and 4.50mm thick. It weighs 40.91g.
