View from the area known as il-Wardija ta' San Ġorġ

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The geomorphology of the Wardija ta' San Ġorġ area played a significant role in its utilization as a settlement during the Bronze Age. The prominent feature known as Ġebel Ċiantar was formed due to the intersection of the Magħlaq Fault system with a northeast trending fault. This geological process resulted in the creation of a distinctive promontory that offered strategic advantages to its inhabitants.

One key factor contributing to the settlement's attractiveness was the presence of freshwater springs. The exposed perched water table at the junction between the Upper Coralline Limestone plateau and the Blue Clay beneath it supplied the underlying fields with a reliable source of fresh water. This natural resource was highly valuable and would have supported agricultural activities and sustained the community residing in the area.

Moreover, the defensible nature of the promontory further enhanced its appeal as a settlement site. The Bronze Age people recognized the strategic advantages offered by Wardija ta' San Ġorġ. They strategically positioned their settlement to protect the landward side from potential enemy attacks, utilizing the natural topography and promontory as a defensive barrier.

The combination of freshwater availability, the defensibility of the promontory, and the favorable geomorphological characteristics made Wardija ta' San Ġorġ an ideal location for Bronze Age settlement. These factors played a crucial role in attracting and sustaining a community during that period, leaving behind a rich archaeological legacy that offers insights into the ancient history of the area.
