Summary
English: Panel History of Paris "Carrières d'Amérique".
On the edge of Belleville and La Villette, the Beauregard hillock was the object of intense exploitation of gypsum stone in the quarries of America. This name, attested to as early as 1682, has nothing to do with an improbable export of plaster to the New World. With the creation in 1838 of the Société plâtrière de Paris, a company owned by the banker Jacques Laffitte, the extraction of gypsum took on an exceptional dimension. Almost exhausted, having become a den of tramps and loiterers, the quarries were filled in in 1875 and replaced by two ephemeral horse and fodder markets on either side of the Place du Danube, while the area between the Rue David-d'Angers and the Rue de la Solidarité became a set of allotments around 1904. |
