Summary
[edit]DescriptionPanch Badri Hindu tirtha sites, Uttarakhand India.jpg |
English: The Panch Badri is a historic Hindu tirtha (pilgrimage) route mentioned in ancient Sanskrit texts. These five sites are associated with the Vaishnava (VIshnu) tradition. Of these, Vishal Badri (Badrinath temple) is particularly sacred to the Hindus.
The Panch Badris are long routes through scenic Himalayan valleys, many that feed the river systems irrigating northern plains. The Badri tirtha route overlaps with the Panch Kedar and Panch Prayag routes. The Badri sites have temple complexes and monasteries, associated pilgrim facilities such as mandapa (choultries), community kitchens and pilgrim trails built by Himalayan Hindu kingdoms. These pilgrim stop points emerged as small towns and villages over time. The temple groups are dedicated to Vishnu, Lakshmi, Shiva, Durga, Ganesha, Surya, Navagraha, and other deities of Hinduism. In addition to Panch Badri, Uttarakhand has many other famed pilgrimages whose routes partly overlap. These include the Panch Prayag, the Panch Kedar, the Char Dham, and others.
