Description

c/n 278, l/n BS095 / 3131. Built 1983. This is a genuine ‘Gulf War’ Tornado and actually flew the highest number of missions by any Tornado during the war. It is preserved wearing the markings of its final operational unit, 12sqn, Royal Air Force, and is on display in the ‘AirSpace’ hangar at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford Airfield, Cambridgeshire, UK. 26th January 2018

The following history for ZA465 comes from the IWM website:-

“11 Oct 1983 - May 1984 at St Athan 4 May 1984 - Feb 1987 served with 16 Squadron Laarbruch 19 Feb 1987 - March 1987 served with 617 Squadron Marham 16 Mar 1987 - May 1987 served with 15, 16, and 20 Squadron Laarbuch 7 May 1987 - 28 May 1987 served with 31 Squadron Bruggen 28 May 1987 - June 1987 served with 15 Squadron Laarbruch 23 June 1987 - July 1987 served with 27 Squadron Marham 8 July 1987 - Sept 1987 served with 15 Squadron Laarbruch From 14 Sept 1987 served with 16 Squadron Laarbruch This aircraft also served in the Gulf War with 16 Squadron. It flew the highest number of RAF Tornado bombing missions during the war. During the Gulf war it operated from bases in Saudi Arabia carrying out two runway denial, 28 free fall and 14 laser guided bombing missions. After the war it returned to the UK and was then redeployed to RAF Germany with the famous No.617 'Dambusters' Squadron. The aircraft was then modified to GR1B standard which gave it an additional anti-shipping capability equipped with the Sea Eagle anti-ship missile. Since modification it had been based at RAF Lossiemouth in Scotland until its transfer to Duxford.

The legal title to the Aircraft to the Imperial War Museum was granted in January 2002.”
