Text Appearing Before Image:
SCENE ON OTOQUE ISLAND, PANAMA BAY has expended to give to the trade of the world thehighway so long and so fruitlessly sought. An actof unselfish bounty, freely given to all the peoplescf the earth, comes to obliterate at last the long record of interna-tional perfidy, pi-racy and plunderwhich is the historyof Panama. This book is be-ing written in thelast days of con-structive work onthe Panama Canal. The tens of thou-sands of workmen, the hundreds ofofficers are prepar-ing to scatter totheir homes in allparts of the world. The pleasant andhospitable societyof the Zone of whichI have written isbreaking up. Vil- INTRODUCTION
Text Appearing After Image:
THE RANK, LUSH GROWTH OF THE JUNGLE lages are being abandoned, and the water ofGatun Lake is silently creeping up and the greenadvance guard of the jungle swiftly stealing overthe forsaken ground. While this book is yet newmuch that I have written of as part of the pro-gram of the future will indeed have become partof the record of the past. ■ 1 think that anyone who visited the Canal Zoneduring the latter years of construction work willhave carried away with him a very pleasant andlively recollection of a social life and hospitalitythat was quite ideal. The ofRcial centers at Culebraand An con, the quarters of the army at Camp Otisand the navy and marine corps at Camp Elliott wereever ready to entertain the visitor from the statesand his enjoyment was necessarily tinged withregret that the charming homes thrown open to himwere but ephemeral, and that the passage of the first ship through the canal would mark the begin-ning of their dismantling and abandonment.
