Summary

[edit]
Description

This is not only the tallest surviving pagoda in Korea, but since 1984, the last surviving wooden pagoda in Korea as well. Initially built in 553, it was destroyed during the 1590s Japanese invasions and rebuilt in 1624.

Inside there are eight pictures depicting the eight life stages of Sakyamuni Buddha, hence the name of the pagoda.

According to Wikipedia, Bruce Lee came here to shoot scenes for his movie Game of Death, with each story of this tower representing each of the five different martial arts. But he soon died, and the movie was released with Beopjusa scenes edited out.

A replica of this pagoda adorns the top of National Folk Museum at Gyeongbok Palace in Seoul.
