Turkish divers cutting Russian torpedoes

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Turkish divers cutting Russian torpedoes.

The Italian weekly L'Illustrazione Italiana featured this illustration in its August 26, 1877 issue, on page 128. There was a very short text relating to torpedoes on page 135.

The picture shows Turkish divers clearing a Russian mine-field. Note that all aquatic explosives were referred to as "torpedoes" at the time. The clearing of the mine-field is at Poti.

The next issue of the weekly - on September 2 - had the full story on page 151. Here it is explained that the Russians might have torpedo boats with Whitehead and Harvey torpedoes - much more dangerous than spar torpedoes.
