Description

A bone model made by French prisoners of war of a frigate of the French Revolutionary War/Napoleonic Wars period at the Glasgow Transport Museum, 2 March 2007. Although not labelled, and there were a large number of French frigate classes in this period, it appears to me a model of the 44-gun Pallas Class which was the standard 18 pdr frigate of the Napoleonic Wars and produced in large numbers. These were originally rated as 40-gunners but carried 44, and they were rerated as such, although later many carried 46 guns.

The Pallas Class was designed by Jacques-Noel Sane as a continuation (with a very few minor changes) of his very successful Hortense Class, 6 of which were completed in 1804-07 (and which in turn was an improvement of his Virginie Class, 10 of which were completed in 17994-1802) . Although 62 Pallas Class vessels were ordered, 5 were cancelled and broken up on the stocks and 57 completed in launched 1808-32 and completed 1808-33. There were others proposed (and possibly ordered) which were cancelled before the keel was laid down.

The Pallas herself was built at the Basse-Indre shipyard of Mathurin and Antoine Crucy, being launched and completed in 1808. She survived the Wars and was broken up in 1824. The Pallas Class measured 144.6 ft x 37 ft x 19 ft, had a burthen of 760 tons (similar to the Hortense Class) and initially the standard armament of 44 guns was as follows (although this changed over time and varied from ship-to-ship depending which shipyard built it):

Gaillards (linked Quaterdeck + F’o’csle together): 8x8 pdrs + 8x36 pdr carronades (but from 1810 2x18 pdrs + 16x24 pdr carronades)

Upper Deck: 28x18 pdrs
