Description

Paleo-sea cliff just south of Dripping Rock Cave, southwestern San Salvador Island, eastern Bahamas.

During the mid-Holocene, a wave-cut, sea cliff was formed (see above photo) along a rocky shoreline of the southwestern corner of San Salvador Island. The present-day sea cliff at Grotto Beach, a little northeast of the above locality, is a continuation of the cliff shown above. This former sea cliff is now well inland, separated from the present-day shoreline by strip of land (to the left of the cliff in this photo) - a Holocene strand plain composed principally of nonlithified, aragonitic biogenic sands. This progradational strand plain formed in about 1000 years, at ~3 to 4 ka.
