The gestation period is 120-180 days long. Only one young is born at a time, which is weaned at one month of age; Social Structure: Adults are solitary; Behavior: The pale-throated three-toed sloth spends most of its life upside down and is most active at night; Status: No special status; Interesting Facts: A pale-throated three-toed sloth's hair grows in the opposite direction of most animals' fur, with the ends pointing downward as the sloth hangs upside-down in the trees. They often appear to be greenish in color; pale-throated three-toed sloth are so slow that algae will grow in their hair. Pale-throated three-toed sloths also have two extra neck vertebrae, allowing a greater range of head movement. Their eyesight and hearing are extremely poor and are so adapted for arboreal life that they cannot walk normally on the ground. |
