Palaeloithic axe showing directions of strikes |
||
Description |
English: Palaeolithic hand axe or a Late Neolithic ovate made from a mottled mid-brown flint. The dorsal surface has circa 30% cortex at the proximal end, however this may be re-cortification, since the layer is very thin and almost translucent. The edges and distal end have suffered damage. The surface is fairly smooth and appears polished in places. Although there is no doubt as to the findspot of the axe, there is doubt over whether it is from this location originally. There are two factors that cast doubt; the first is that the find is from Holbeach, which due to its location in the wash has seen tremendous silting since Roman times. Any material earlier than Roman would be expected to be buried very deep. Secondly, at the other end of the field, some 70m away, the finder discovered a fossil on the reverse of which were the letters 'P30'. This find may indicate that the axe formed part of collection that has been disposed of in fairly recent times.
Dr Kevin Leahy adds: it is possible that this object is actually a Late Neolithic 'ovate' an interpretation which would be supported by its lack of iron staining and relatively irregular shape. |
