Description

O Palácio do Rei do Lixo, também conhecido por Torre de Coina ou Palácio da Bruxa, está situado na freguesia de Coina, no Barreiro, sendo bem vísivel por quem passa na Nacional 10.

Foi no início do século XIX que o proprietário daqueles terrenos (outrora pertencentes a familiares da realeza), Manuel Martins Gomes Júnior, mandou construir uma edíficio com uma torre que lhe permitisse alcançar visualmente outras propriedades que tinha e ao mesmo tempo ostentar a riqueza que amealhou. Era conhecido pelo Rei do Lixo, porque fez fortuna com a sua actividade para recolha de detritos em Lisboa, bem como através da compra e venda de lixo. Mais tarde, já através dos seus descendentes, o local veio a tornar-se numa importante quinta agrícola. Contudo a família nunca habitou o Palácio, dado que o edifício nunca chegou a ser terminado.

Na década de 70, o Palácio do Rei do Lixo foi comprado por um construtor, António Xavier de Lima, com o intuito de ali construir uma pousada. Porém, em 1988, um misterioso incêndio deflagrou dentro do palácio.
